Who's at risk

After thoroughly reviewing a study conducted by Yale University, FDA Officials originally determined that the health risks associated with PPA were greatest for adults under age 50, particularly women. In the study, hemorrhagic strokes, or bleeding into the brain, occurred within three days of taking PPA products.

But "You could not predict who it would occur in," said Dr. Ganley, head of the FDA's over-the-counter drug division.

Recently a U.S. District Court Ruling, which applies to all cases pending in federal court across the US, determined that there was no reason to limit the increased danger to a specific gender or to any particular age groups. Expert witness testimony before the Court confirmed that the danger logically extends to children and the elderly - and that men are just as likely to suffer strokes from PPA as women.
